When is the best time to photograph my newborn?

Newborn babies are ideal to photograph between 5 & 10 days old, when they are still very flexible and womb-like and spend most of their time sleeping. Shortly after this time baby starts to become more animated, sleeps lighter and becomes stronger. So after 12 days babies are not viable for newborn photography.

What can I expect from my newborn session?

A typical session is approximately 4 hours long. While we do the majority of the work it is hugely important to keep at least one parent close to baby at all times. This will aid to keep baby calm and help to keep you calm too. We generally try and work through 3-4 setups in the time and pass baby back to parents while we swap the sets around.

Do you provide any props for the session?

All props, including an abundance of hats, blankets, wraps, headbands, beanies, throws, crowns, wings, baskets, buckets, bowls, wagons and much, much more are provided as we personally stylize your session just for you. Even though there is nothing that you need to bring for your babies photographs, but please bring an old towel to go down the business end of baby while the nappy is off.

Are family photos included in the session?

A special part of a newborn session is devoted to capturing the priceless images of a father and a mother with their precious new son or daughter. These as well as family, and sibling shots are all included in the newborn session at no additional cost.

What can I do to help my session go smoothly?

The most important thing you can do is relax.  Beyond that, I recommend that you try to keep your newborn awake for an hour prior to the session, and that you feed your baby just prior to my arrival. Pacifiers are also extremely helpful for allowing me to calm your baby during the session.

What should we wear?

Simple is best.  I photograph newborns wearing nothing at all or with minimal clothing.  If you have special outfits you would like your newborn to wear, I am happy to accommodate, but keep in mind that numerous clothing changes can be disruptive to newborns.  I recommend that the rest of the family wear clothing that coordinates without matching exactly.  Children should wear clothes that they like and in which they are comfortable, although it is generally best to avoid busy patterns and logos.  I’m happy to work with you to select clothing for your session, and will also accommodate clothing changes if you’d like a variety of looks.

Can extended family members come to the shoot?

Unfortunately no.  Surplus family members cannot attend or spectate.  This is for a number of reasons but mainly due to keeping the environment stress free and quiet but also due to us having a lot of equipment to move around in the space.

What if my baby does any wee’s or poos?

This happens, it does and when it does we deal with it. Don’t worry, in the event of this we do our best to get an old towel around the business end to avoid any further soiling. Baby is then taken away and cleaned by the parents while I  will remove any soiled props and send them to be cleaned.

What if my baby doesn’t go to sleep or is upset?

While this can reduce the amount of posing we can do, we can still work with an awake baby. Though it would need to be a content baby, a grizzly baby will need to be soothed before we could continue. If a baby is unsettled or upset for the duration of the shoot then we will offer you a half price second sitting to finish off the job.
